Ocean inspired interiors.

The things that have me hook, line, and sinker for a little sea-inspired design & how to incorporate a nod to the ocean in your own home.

From an early age, we walked the beach daily with our mum and two dogs, rain, hail, or shine.

In the winter, dressed in our raincoats and boots, we would find washed-up treasures in the mounds of weed after a storm. I vividly remember a moment when I thought a sea snake was plastic until it slithered across the sand just centimetres from my eager hands. Our collection of sea glass, blasted smooth by its travels, was added to over the years and kept in a jar on the back porch, along with shells and the occasional seahorse frame. We were always on the lookout for interesting-shaped seaweed that we'd call ‘dead man's fingers’ or an old rubber sandal ‘dead man’s shoe ’. Even now as grown adults, my siblings and I will shout “dead man's ear!” to a certain shaped sponge when we are together, re-living our childhoods in the simplest way.

Whilst winters were woolly and felt like an adventure, our summers were spent in the most idyllic way - collecting shells to decorate sand castles, swimming in sparkly blue water on the coast of Western Australia and falling asleep under faded rainbow-coloured umbrellas, watermelon still stuck to our sticky hands.

This nostalgia for carefree seasons by the sea has subconsciously crept into my design work. Whether it’s a kitchen handle or wall light, I am forever inspired by a call to the coast. I find myself drawn to timber materials, rattan blinds and wicker pieces as decor, while Ive convinced myself a tiny fish-shaped anything for the table is an essential purchase.
